Develop emotional, social and systems intelligence in your team
In order to build strong and resilient teams, it is essential to learn and experience what it truly means to connect across our different backgrounds, roles and needs. The workplace, alongside our family, is one of the places where we can practice genuine connection with ourselves, others and as a collective.
Connecting: from me to we
Connection begins with self-reflection. It enables us to contribute authentically, ask questions, set boundaries, and engage constructively in conflict. At the same time, connection also means empathising with others, understanding that we may have different perceptions and beliefs, yet can still collaborate effectively. It is about hearing and acknowledging each other’s feelings and needs, and discussing strategies that guide our collaboration.
Once we connect with others, something else emerges: the ‘we’ as a team. We become part of a bigger whole, a web of relationships that forms our team and our organisation. Team dynamics come into play, and this is also where we have the opportunity to develop awareness for the whole and create a working atmosphere that supports the team and its mission. As a team, we learn to relate to each other and connect with the wisdom this diverse network holds.

From emotional and social intelligence…
Research on effective teams shows that the highest-performing ones aren’t necessarily those with the smartest or most experienced members, but those whose members genuinely see, hear, and value one another.
Such a culture of psychological safety develops when team members are aware of their behavior and emotions and connect with each other through expression and empathy. Managers play a crucial role in this. Leaders who lack emotional control and cannot handle stressful situations create additional stress for their colleagues and negatively impact group dynamics.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive, interpret, and regulate your own and others’ emotions, and to use emotions to guide your thinking and actions. With social intelligence, we are aware of the other, and have the ability to understand and navigate relationships and interactions effectively and authentically.
…to systems intelligence
Every team has its unique culture, atmosphere and dynamics- it can be seen as a living system, a web of relationships with its own purpose and needs. Every team member matters, and has a role in this system. Through the development of systems intelligence, a team is enabled to see itself as a whole, beyond its individuals. Teams, or systems, are naturally intelligent, creative and resourceful. By creating systems awareness, the team is able to sense the emotional field and needs of the system, and can from there collectively develop strategies that benefit the whole: a process resulting in a shared sense of purpose, values, strategies and the teams unique creative potential.
